The Slow Food Movement is building a new global network of Slow Food Farms. The network brings together - and makes visible - the agriculture that builds the land, the people and the other lives that create / form into our food. Encouraged in agri-ecological principles. At home "agro-organic" has a little academic ring, but the term is widely used in South America, for example.
With the network, Slow Food will gather and make these farms visible and be a stronger voice in the work of more sustainable and democratic food systems. Worldwide, there are now over 662 Slow Food Farms in 73 countries - 20 in Denmark - and there are constantly more.
Characteristics of a Slow Food Farm
â ¢Priorities biodiversity. Agriculture is a living ecosystem in which many different vegetables, fruits and trees grow together. High animal welfare is natural with animals outside.
🚜Builds a healthy organic soil through green soil cover, minimal tillage, compost and time. Earth whose living microorganisms are fed. Soil that regenerates and becomes more fertile every season.
🤝 Make connections to consumers. Often direct sales with vegetable subscription, farm shop and markets. In order to shift profits from intermediaries to producers, both producers and consumers receive a fair price. Events on the farm. Life in the countryside.
💶Has a varied production with multiple sources of income. Creating a rich life for employees and family. Is aware that fair remuneration for all farmers must be resolved politically at global level.
🌱Is conscious of the choice of seeds. It's nice to have inheritance varieties with Nordic traditions. Not genetically modified, not patented. Seeds that have fed us together for centuries.
💧Has a circular approach to resources. Renewable energy and limited water consumption. Thoughts on sustainable construction. Waste from one production is valuable input to another.
🧑🌾 Build and share knowledge. Is part of the changed food future we want.
Exclusion criteria
Slow Food Farms are available all over the world under very different conditions. It is therefore also worth mentioning that a farm is excluded from becoming a Slow Food Farm if there are:
- Pesticides, fertilisers and other synthetic agrochemicals
- High degree of specialisation, including monoculture.
- Use of GMOs or new genomic techniques (NGT).
- Growing crops without soil i.e. in other growing materials or hydroponics
- Heated or chilled greenhouses.
- Primary focus on export markets.
- Significant environmental pollution.
- Use of growth-promoting hormones in animal husbandry.
- Violation of human rights or animal welfare.
